Makru, Barak Bridges on NH-53 : Construction work on in full swing

Construction of two major bridges-Makru Bridge and Barak Bridge on National Highway-53 (Imphal-Jiribam road) is underway amidst the dreaded pandemic to ensure early opening to traffic.
According to a reliable source, Makru bridge is likely to be opened to traffic by the end of June while Barak Bridge will take a while.
Continuing that Makru Bridge will have two spans-32 metre and 92 metre, the source confirmed that construction of the 32 metre span is already completed while that of 92 metre is awaiting curing.
After the curing period (28 days) of the 92 metre span is completed, load testing will be done, it said and apprised that the bridge will be opened to traffic if the test finds no limitation.

The bridge will also have a footpath on either side, it said and added that the footpath is in the slab cons- truction process.
The source further stated that black-topping of the approach roads to Makru Bridge also commenced today.
According to the source, the construction of dirt walls and approach slabs on both the entry points of the bridge will be completed within a week.
By the end of June, the bridge will be ready for opening other than some minor works, the source reiterated.
The source, meanwhile, said that Barak Bridge will have three-one 32 metre span each on the Imphal and Jiribam sides and one 90 metre span in the middle.
The construction of the two 32 metre spans is completed, while that of the 90 metre span is in the phase of erection, it said, adding that tentative date for completion of Barak Bridge construction could not be ascertained as of yet.
The construction work has been on for some time now.
