Imphal, May 24 2012:
Reacting to the abrupt steep hike in petrol price, the Manipur People's Party has pledged to take a strong stance against the price hike while drawing the attention of the authority concerned not to let the price hike affect the North East states particularly Manipur.
In a statement, the MPP Vice-President, S Umananda pointed out that the increase in the price of petrol was the first of its kind in the history of democratic India while attributing the shocking development to the UPA Government's inept handling of the country's economy.
Stating that the hike in petrol price would inevitably be accompanied by rise in the price of essential commodities, the MPP statement said the Congress-led Government should be held responsible for all the predicaments of the economically weaker section of the people due to the price hike.
The statement also conveyed deep apprehension that the steep increase in petrol price may give undue advantages to black marketeers, adding that it could be a season of harvest for them.
Pointing out that the new development comes when even the State is yet to fully recover from the economic blockade that was imposed for a protracted time last year, the MPP demanded that the hike should not be made effective in Manipur and other NE states.
