Lamka,July 23 2015:
A day after heavy rain triggered flash flood in Churachandpur town, about two hundred families, as per official records, have so far been displaced and are being provided shelters in two relief camps.
Following the red alert sounded by the district administration yesterday evening, these families most of which are settled along the Khuga river bank, have been evacuated late in the night as the river recorded a significant rise from around 8 pm.
The sudden surge that occurred at a time when residents thought the intensity of the rain has weakened took many of them by surprise.

Zomunnuam, New Zoveng, Kamdou Veng, and Down Town Tuibuong are some of the localities said to have received the maximum impact of the flood.
With yesterday's flood drawing the attention of the local authorities, the Deputy Commissioner, Chura-chandpur, Lunminthang Haokip has petitioned the Chief Engineer of the State IFC Department to assess the rivers in the district under the State Flood Plain Zoning Act to minimise any further destruction.
The district authority also convened an emergency meeting today wherein the flood situations, its causes and chances of avoiding similar surprises have been reportedly deliberated minutely.
Top officials from the district have shared their findings during the meet and were of the opinion that a proper policy to govern river bank settlement along five major rivers Khuga, Koite, Lanva, Chiengkon and Mata be put in place without delay.
Meanwhile, the water level at Khuga Dam, which is located about 5 kms off the town, has risen 3 metres above the normal radial gate height, according to an official.
