Imphal, July 23 2011:
Suspecting foul play over the death of Oinam Ningol Thongbam Ongbi Roji Devi (18), whom her husband claimed to have died from consuming poison, her maternal family members have demanded investigation into the matter so as to find out the culprits and punish them according to law of the land.
Originally from Mongsangei School Leirak, Roji was married to one Somorjit (19) of Churachandpur Thengra Leikai and died on July 20 after about two years of marriage.
Addressing a press conference in this connection at Manipur Press Club here this afternoon, one S Panthoi, a member of the maternal family, informed that on receiving the news about the death of Roji at the hospital where she was admitted after alleged consumption of poison in the afternoon of July 20, the maternal family members went to her husband's place at Churachandpur Thengra Leikai.
But the body of Roji was found lying on a bed covered with a white cloth.
On removing the cloth, some black spots could be spotted on the right side ear of Roji.
Such dark spots on the alleged victim of suicide is suspicious, Panthoi said.
Panthoi recalled that after an agreement between the two parties, it was decided that the body of Roji would be taken to RIMS for post-mortem.
But the family members of the husband could not produce any documents related to the reported hospitalisation of Roji at Churachandpur district hospital.
It was only much latter that one of the family members of the husband rushed back to get some documents from a doctor.
Moreover, she further recalled, the family members of the husband could not show the container from which Roji allegedly consumed the poison.
Suspicious of conduct of the husband's family members, Roji's mother Oinam Rita lodged a complaint at Churachandpur police station.
Based on the complaint, the police communicated to the maternal family members yesterday that Somorjit and his parents were arrested in addition to recovering the poison container.
She also said Roji's body will not be handed over to her in-laws and the last rites would be performed at the maternal home.
Oinam Rita, mother of late Roji, who was also present during the press conference, wondered how could her daughter think of taking her own life leaving behind a doting 9-month old child.
The bereaved mother informed that Roji was her only daughter and she had told her (nother) that she was not happy at her husband's place when Roji came to visit her maternal home around a month back.
After Roji went back, no telephone contact could be established but when the contact was established with her mother-in-law, the latter said that Roji's telephone was out of order, Rita informed.
It may be recalled that on the day of the incident, Somorjit claimed that he found his wife lying unconscious after consuming poison.
She was immediately taken to Churachandpur district hospital for treatment but breathed her last not long after.
