Rape convict sentenced to 20 years in jail

Maibam Manojkumar, Session Judge Imphal East, sentences Irengbam Dhanajit, a rape convict, to 20 years in jail today.
The sentence was passed by the Court following the sentence hearing against the convict Irungbam Dhanajit (30) s/o Tomba of Pungdongbam Awang Leikai, who was convicted under section 6 of POCSO on May 20 .
During the hearing today, the Special PP of the State submitted that Irungbam Dhanajit was convicted for raping a minor and the victim also happened to be the daughter of one of his close relatives.
As such the act committed by the convict is a very serious offence, the Special PP opined and prayed for awarding life imprisonment to the convict.
On the other hand, the defense counsel contended that there is no criminal record against the convict and he is a married man with two children.
The convict is also the sole bread earner of the family and if he is sentenced for life, his children will suffer a lot as there will be no one to look after them.
The Court, after hearing both parties and going through the materials on record sentenced Irungbam Dhanajit to 20 years in jail.
The Court also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on him and ordered that he has to undergo six months further imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine.
The Court further ordered the period time which the convict has already underwent in judicial custody during the investigation as well as during the trial, to be set from the sentence announced.
