Oil drilling works staunchly opposed

A public hearing on oil exploration plan and drilling activities was held by Manipur Pollution Control Board at Shibapurikhal (Ankhasuo) village in Churachandpur district yesterday amidst tight security.
The hearing was chaired by Jacintha Lazarus, DC of Churachandpur while the panel members included DFO of Jiribam, HD Gangte; Environmental Engineer of MPCB, T Mangi Singh; Assistant Manager of Jubilant Oil and Gas Pvt Ltd, Tejender Pal Singh and member secretary of MPCB, K Jagdishwar Singh.
The hearing, which was planned to cover 35 villages of Vangai Range, was attended by just 5/6 villagers who also raised strong objections against the oil exploration and drilling activities in the area.
It may be mentioned that various Hmar chiefs and villagers, Hmar Inpui, SIPHRO, ZHRF and others had registered opposition against the oil exploration activities.

Meanwhile, in a statement Committee on the Protection of Natural Resources in Manipur (CPNRM) said that only 14 people attended the public hearing yesterday at Shibapurikhal village.
All the public present at the hearing dissented the oil exploration plan besides some public staging a protest outside the meeting hall.
During the hearing, representative of Jubilant Energy said oil drilling would leave a 'low footprint' in the area.
However, further queries on who will take responsibility in the event of an environmental disaster resulting from the exploration were not responded accurately.
JOGPL representative only said that it would do its best to avert such disaster, said a statement issued by Pamei Tingenlung, convenor of CPNRM.
L Enga, chairman of All Vangai Area Chiefs and VAs' Association; Huoplien, chief of Ankhasuo village, Pamei Tingenlung; Lalawilien, general president of Hmar Inpui have spoke at the hearing.
Previous hearings were conducted in Jiribam, Parbung, Nungba and Tamenglong district headquarters since July this year.
