Roll back fuel price hike: AMSU

Imphal, February 20 2021: The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has put forward a number of demands including roll back of fuel prices which have been hiked continuously.

Speaking to media persons at their DM College campus office today, AMSU general secretary Bipinchandra Ahanthem pointed out that travel fares have risen manifold as the prices of petrol and diesel have skyrocketed.

Manipuri students studying outside the State like Guwahati and Shillong are now facing severe difficulties on account of the steep hike in travel fares, he said.

Bipinchandra then urged the State Government to take up necessary measures so as to reduce fuel prices as well as travel fares urgently.

He also appealed to the Government to enforce the Manipur Private Registration and Regulations Act, 2017 from the academic session 2021-22 by framing appropriate rules and regulations for private hostels.

He said that AMSU would be compelled to launch different modes of agitation if the same Act is not enforced in letter and spirit without undue delay.

Pointing out that the Government has already issued an order which said that schools should charge only 30 per cent tuition fee for July to December last year, Bipinchandra said that AMSU would start verifying if there is any school which defies the particular order.

All the students of the State were deprived of formal education for several months on account of the COVID-19 pandemic and now college students are being denied normal classes due to the teachers' cease work strike who are demanding 7th Pay.

Manipuri society will pay a very heavy price if the students are denied formal education any longer, he warned and urged the Government to work out a solution to the college teachers' demand.

Lamenting that DM University is still unable to achieve the status of a full fledged university, the AMSU general secretary appealed to authorities concerned to develop adequate infrastructure and recruit necessary manpower so as to make DMU a full fledged university.

He decried that the Government is yet to fulfil any of the demands highlighted in a memorandum submitted to the Education Minister.
