Imphal, December 18 2024:
The Naga Peoples' Organisation (NPO), Senapati and United Mao Conference (UMC) have taken strong exception to the restriction imposed on the visit of Chief Minister N Biren Singh visit to Senapati by Kuki-Zo Council (KZC).
While the United Mao Conference (UMC) advised the KZC to refrain from meddling in Mao community affairs, the NPO said that the attempt by Kuki leaders to bar the Chief Minister from attending Naga festivals or visiting Naga villages is nothing short of overstepping their authority.
What NPO says
NPO, Senapati expressed its profound disappointment with the persistent actions of certain Kuki Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) which have repeatedly issued warnings and attempted to prevent the Chief Minister and Government officials from visiting Naga villages or attending Naga festivals in Senapati District.
NPO, in a statement, reminded the Kuki community and their leaders that the Nagas are a neutral party in the ongoing conflict in Manipur.
Naga people advocate peace and harmony in the region, it said and added that they, however, are unhappy with Kuki leaders who have frequently issued unwarranted warnings against the Chief Minister's participation in Naga cultural and community events.
It is pertinent to highlight that the Chief Minister, as the leader of the State, represents all communities, including the Naga community, NPO said and urged all concerned to respect the neutrality of the Naga community and to work towards genuine peace and understanding in the State.
It is only through mutual respect and cooperation that lasting harmony can be achieved in the region, the release stated.
No authority to interfere
Expressing deep concern over the press note issued by KZC regarding the visit of Chief Minister N Biren Singh to Senapati, UMC, meanwhile, said that the Council representing Kuki-Zo has no jurisdiction or authority to interfere in the cultural or administrative affairs of the Mao people.
"Robvena Ni is a cultural celebration deeply rooted in our tradition and any attempt to dictate or disrupt the free movement of individuals, including dignitaries, to our land will not be tolerated," said the Mao Conference.
Saying that Mao people advocate peace and have always respected the rights and sentiments of other communities, the UMC forewarned that continued interference in their affairs, especially by the Kuki-Zo Council will lead to severe repercussions.
"The Mao community does not seek conflict, but we will firmly defend our rights, tradition and territory if challenged," it added.
Advising the KZC to instead focus on fostering peace and coexistence, the UMC said that any attempt to incite tension in their land will be met with strong and resolute manners.
The UMC appealed to all stakeholders to respect the boundaries of different communities to avoid unnecessary conflict.
