Imphal, December 18 2016:
Taking serious note of the attack on the Centre Church of Manipur Baptist Convention on December 17, the Council of Baptist Churches in North East India (CBCNEI) has today demanded a judicial inquiry to probe the matter and to book the miscreants as per the law of the land.
In a statement issued to the press today, CBCNEI said that the attack on religious institutions and worship places is against the Constitution of the country where religious freedom is guaranteed.
Reaffirming that the Church is apolitical and is not involved nor encourage any violent activities, the statement said that Church works to promote peace, harmony, tranquillity and peaceful co-existence of all.
Stating that MBC is a constituent unit of CBCNEI, it added that MBC therefore does not belong to any particular community or tribe.
The CBCNEI comprises of Baptist Churches from Assam, Meghalaya, Karbi Anglong, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram.
MBC has also strongly condemned the incident and added that it is the biggest Church in the State comprising 29 associations with almost 1400 local Churches from all over the State.
Some parts of the building including the Centre Church were damaged in the attack.
Appealing to all to refrain from attacking religious centres such as Church, Mosque, Temple etc in the future, MBC urged all the communities to abstain from hatred and violence.
