Imphal, July 18 2022:
All Manipur Women Social Reformation and Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) general secretary K Sobita has said that a stringent anti-drug law is required to uproot drug from the state as the ongoing government's 'War on Drug' mission could not get the desired result.
Sobita stated this during a discussion on drug and the society held at Chanung Mayai Leikai on Sunday.
The discussion was organised jointly by Nupi Samaj, Chanung Kanglei Chanura Lup, Kanglei Sintha Lup and Chanung Development Committee.
Apart from Sobita, the discussion was also attended by Nupi Samaj advisor K Indu, CADA president H Priyo, Kanglei Chanura Lup president Sarangthem Thoibimacha Chanu and Chanung Development Committee president Y Kokngang.
During the discussion, Sobita said that Nupi Smaj has been conducting awareness programme in far flung places of the state to uproot drug and intoxicants and the main objective of organising the programme is to create awareness among the women about the impact of drug and related items to the society.
Despite being a dry state, liquor is available at every nook and corner of the state both openly and secretly, she said, adding that ineffective implementation of liquor prohibition law by the government has led to this problem.
While contending that the number of drug sellers and users has increased rapidly in the state due to lack of a proper anti-drug policy in the state, Sobita said that a stringent anti-drug law including provision for awarding capital punishment of the arrested drug sellers is required to effectively deal with drug problems and uproot the menace of drugs from the state.
