Imphal, February 14 2016:
The All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) has accused Manipur police commandos of harassing delegates of Naga Students' Federation (NSF), the apex Naga students' body, who were heading towards Ukhrul from Kohima to attend Lui-Ngai-Ni celebration this morning around 6.30 at Mantripukhri.
According to a statement issued by the information and publicity secretary of ANSAM, James Inka, the NSF delegates were unusually stopped by Manipur police commandos led by an SI on a white gypsy bearing registration No MN 01K 0350 .
"Not only were they checked, frisked and mobile phone seized but were abused and provoked in a very communal tone," ANSAM said.
"Had it not been for the passers-by who started gathering, ANSAM suspects that Manipur police commandos had the motive to physically make them disappear as they had already called for a truck and reinforcement to take them away," it said.
"The tribals have been experiencing such violence and brutalities regularly and ANSAM is not surprised but we would like to question as to why civil police commit such violent and communal harassment against civilians", it said.
ANSAM demanded apology from the responsible authorities and urged to discipline their personnel to res- pect citizens and human rights.
