Imphal, June 13 2011:
Along with demolishing all the unauthorised dams constructed on Waishel Maril, the canal has been dredged today ensuring smooth flow of rain water flooding most parts of Imphal and beyond.
The demolition drive was carried out under the direct supervision of Irrigation and Flood Control Minister N Biren.
MLA RK Anand and officials of Irrigation and Flood Control Department were also present during the demolition which was carried out with the help of excavators.
Some parts of the canal at areas like Irom Meijrao, Pukhrambam and Sanjenbam have also been dredged to ensure smooth flow of water.
Under the Minor Irrigation Department, a large number of earthern dams have been constructed along Waishel Maril for utilising the water from the canal for irrigation purposes.
However, these earthern dams block the flow of rain water, thereby resulting in artificial flood in most parts of residential areas under Keishamthong, Sagaolband, Naoriya Pakhanglakpa and Wangoi Assembly Constituencies.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the demolition, Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Biren reiterated that the Minor Irrigation Department had not consulted his Department at the time of constructing these dams.
The Minister also appealed to the people for proper maintenance of the drainage system to avoid flood during rainy season as well as for co-operation with the engineers of his department in carrying out their duties.
MLA Anand expressed happiness over the concern of the Minister who himself was present during dredging of Waishel Maril.
However, he pointed out that there should be co-ordination among the Departments in implementation of any developmental projects.
