Imphal, March 12 2025:
Emphasising the alarming prevalence of vision loss due to glaucoma, Health Director Dr Chambo Gonmei has called for a collaborative effort to prevent/control the disease.
Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease that can damage the optic nerve, leading to vision loss or blindness.
Today, National Programme for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment (NPCB&VI) National Health Mission and Directorate of Health Services Manipur jointly organised the opening ceremony of World Glaucoma Week 2025 under the "Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World" at Classic Grande, Chingmeirong.
Addressing the function, Dr Chambo continued that about eight million people suffer from glaucoma globally as per reports.
Saying that there is no specific report on glaucoma prevalence in Manipur, he added that many people who came for treatment, however, were found suffering from glaucoma.
Dr Chambo further stated that glaucoma currently has no complete cure and as such raising awareness about prevention and management of the chronic eye disease is crucial.
While cataract surgery can restore vision, glaucoma can lead to lifelong blindness, he said.
Continuing that glaucoma is more common among diabetic and hypertension patients, as well as the elderly, Dr Chambo urged people, especially those in high-risk groups, to take preventive measures to protect themselves from glaucoma.
State Mission Director of NHM Manipur Dr M Dinesh Singh, Family Welfare Director Dr N Hemantakumar Singh also attended the programme as presidium members.
