Imphal, December 11 2013:
Expressing concern over the report that a flying squirrel was put up for a raffle draw, the People for Animal (PFA) Thoubal today said that putting flying squirrel as a prize for lucky draw at Ukhrul, that too in front of Forest office, is one of the worse wildlife crimes PFA had heard.
Saying that news of saving an animal and giving treatment to them is the best awareness for the public to protect and love animals, a statement issued by the PFA noted that inspite of tremendous work to reach the ears of poachers in the hill areas, nothing has changed as desired.
As an encouragement to them, Forest Dept extended a deaf ear, a blind eye and a dumb mouth to the illegal poachers, the PFA derided.
It further noted that there is cruelty to animals in other hill districts too.
Plenty of wild animals products are found at Tamenglong main market, it pointed out.
Saying that PFA is not only for animals of valley districts, the statement acknowledged many complaints from animal lovers of hill districts to PFA.
It apologised for its helplessness due to shortages of infrastructure though pledging not to rest until something is done for the animals and the higher authority do something in this regard.
Meanwhile disappointed by the lack of compassion, President of Chanura Marup, Chandrabala Devi, expressed her grievances on the killing of the flying squirrel which was put up for the lottery draw in Ukhrul.
She said that while other States across the country are trying to conserve wildlife, the State Government is ignoring or has totally failed to take up preventive measures to save rare animals and ensure their safety.
