Imphal, November 10 2012:
Fearing public outcry, Power Department has been keeping in abeyance a new power tariff even though the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission recommended introduction of the new tariff from September 1 last.
A reliable source informed that under the new power tariff which would replace the existing one, power consumers would be charged Rs 2.40 per unit if their consumption rate is in the range of 0-100 KWPH, Rs 3 per unit for those in the range of 0-200 KWPH and Rs 3.60 per unit for those in the range of 200 KWPH and above.
As the new tariff recommended by the Commission would enhance power bills, Power Department is unable to introduce the same fearing public uproar.
Whether the new tariff would be introduced or not would be decided after Chief Minister O Ibobi returns from Australia.
Under the power tariff system currently in force, consumers are charged Rs 2.20 per unit for those in the range of 1-100 KWPH, Rs 2.70 per unit for 101-200 KWPH and Rs 3.20 for 200 KWPH and above.
The State has 1.91 lakh consumers and the State Government has been spending Rs 15 crores every month in purchasing power.
The State Government is already running into a debt of Rs 70 crores for purchasing power, informed the source.
