Manipur university to host international meet

Manipur university will host an international conference where issues concerning India's Look East Policy and improving trade relations between Manipur and neighbouring countries in the south east Asian region would be the main focus.
The conference to be held on August 17 and 18 under the theme 'Manipur and her neighbours' would be a joint initiative of MU and Jadavpur Association of International Relations.
Indian Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai will also be attending the conference where ambassadors and subject experts from Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar would also participate.
According to an informed source, Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai will also meet Governor Gurbachan Jagat, Chief Minister O ibobi Singh and top-ranking Government officials of the State to discuss issues concerning India's Look East Policy.
Ahead of the meeting with Ranjan Mathai, the State Government is preparing to make a proposal for expanding trade relations with South East Asian countries, including Myanmar, said the source.
Speaking to The Sangai Express Prof Amar Yumnam of MU conveyed that apart from trade and commerce, the forthcoming conference will also provide an opportunity to share information as well as improve cultural ties between Manipur and neighbouring countries.
It is pertinent to mention here that Government of India's ambition to expand trade relations with south asian countries could be gauged from the huge investment in the infrastructure development of Myanmar.
