Barak, Makru bridges likely to see light this year

Imphal, February 09 2020: Constructions works on Barak and Makru bridges along Imphal-Jiribam road, taken up under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways at a cost of Rs 109 crore, will reportedly be complete this year.

The construction of the two iron and concrete bridges, which is handled by the public undertaking National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL), was supposed to be finished by April last year as per the agreement signed between the firm and BIPL.

However, presence of near constant problems like blockade of the bridge construction works, abduction of the engineers as well as land survey works along the Imphal-Jiribam road, had resulted in the delay.

Speaking to The Sangai Express, some of the engineers involved in the construction work acknowledged the importance of the two bridges as the Imphal-Jiribam road is one of the major life lines of Manipur.

They further expressed belief that by October or November this year, the bridge will become fully operational and be able to handle any type of vehicular traffic.

Stating that construction of the superstructure of the bridges is currently underway at Kolkata, the engineers informed that the piers of the bridges will be filled in with concrete tomorrow.

They also explained that as Manipur lacked the facility for large scale metal fabrication, the works have to be done at Kolkata.

The fabricated metal parts will reach Manipur by March and as soon as they reach the State, they will be assembled and work will commence at a fast pace, the engineers assured.
