Ramji Kabui comes alive to Gaan Ngai

Forest and Environment Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar has opined that a community, irrespective of its size or population, needs to safeguard its age-old traditional customs, values and disciplines passed down by the forefathers, explaining that the community which successfully preserves its indigenous cultural tradition and values, is identified as a rich community.
He made the statement as the chief guest during the State Level Gaan Ngai Festival which was celebrated at Ramji Kabui village, Sagolband, today, under the theme "Loss of religion is loss of culture, loss of culture is loss of identity", under the aegis of the State Level Gaan Ngai Committee.

Speaking on the occasion, Shyamkumar said that Gaan Ngai celebration is an age old festival of the Zeliangrong community and conveyed that any Meitei function is regarded as incomplete without the presentation of songs and dances of the Zeliangrong community.
Shyamkumar further said that he will consult with Chief Minister N Biren Singh on the possible developmental work which can be done in the area under his various departments.
He also talked about the historical significance regarding naming of the Ramji Kabui village.
Praying for the Gaan Ngai festival to bring a message of peace, brotherhood as well as making the State free from drugs and intoxicants, the Minister concluded his speech by extending his best wishes to the people, especially the Zeliangrong community on the occasion of Gaan Ngai.
The festival will be celebrated for five days in localities inhabited by the Zeliangrong community.
Haobijam Chaoba Singh, Director, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, N Rajendro, Advisor, ICHAM, members of the State Level Gaan Ngai Celebration Committee, among others were also present at the function.
