Imphal, March 05 2014 :
Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) has got the permission from the Medical Council of India (MCI) to conduct Post Graduate courses in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Pathology.
According to an informed source, although the State is likely to see many specialist doctors in these subjects within a few years, more sought after subjects like Medicine, Gynae, Eye, ENT and Paediatrics etc will need to wait for some more time for PG courses.
The source said that the first and foremost subjects, which are required for launching of a medical college are Non-Clinical subjects Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry.
These subjects must be followed by Para-Clinical disciplines like Pharmacology, Pathology, Preventive and Social Medicine and Forensic Medicine, the source said and added that Clinical subjects such as Medicine, Gynae, Eye, ENT and Paediatrics come third in the line.
After MCI's nod, the source said, JNIMS authority has stepped up for early launching of PG courses in the permitted subjects with funds from the State Government.

Saying that PG courses are to be launched with an aim to upgrade the institute to the status of a full-fledged medical institute, the source opined that launching of PG courses in the permitted subjects would not however help in accomplishing the objective of JNIMS.
The source said that JNIMS's main objective is to produce more MBBS and specialist doctors to solve the problem of inadequacy of health practitioners in the State.
It may be mentioned that Clinical specialist doctors are the most required medical manpower in the far-flung areas, the source said.
As such, producing Non-Clinical and Para-Clinical specialist doctors would not help in solving the problem of lack of medical practitioners in the State, the source claimed.
Saying that the State already has many Non-Clinical specialist doctors in the State Health Services, the source pointed out that it has now become a question what the new specialist doctors would do after they complete their course.
As such, the source opined that it would be better if the State Government preserves the money which is to be spent in opening PG course in Non-Clinical subjects for future launching of PG course in Clinical subjects.
