Imphal Literature Festival kicks off

A four-day Imphal Literature Festival organised by Sahitya Thoupang Lup, Imphal has kicked off today at Lamyanba Shanglen.
The inaugural programme was graced by Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai, Art and Culture Secretary K Radhakumar Singh, K Sundargopal Sharma from Myanmar and AK Sheram from Bangladesh as presidium members.
Speaking at the function, AK Mirabai said that organising such a festival with the aim to revive Manipuri language and literature among the Manipuris settled in Myanmar, Bangladesh Assam, Tripura and other countries is a very commendable step.
Collective effort is required to safeguard our aged-old culture and language.
The State Government is also committed towards the well-being of all the Manipuris residing outside the State and will extend all possible assistance, she added.
AK Sheram said that an association with an objective to revive Manipuri language was formed in 1975.Manipuri books were also published to encourage the people to learn about the Manipuri literature and language and impart the same to the younger generation.
He also sought assistance to promote Meitei Mayek among the Manipuris living in Bangladesh.
K Sundargopal said that there are about 10,000 Manipuris in Myanmar out of which only around 1000 people can speak Manipuri language.
He also urged the gathering to provide possible assistance in reviving the language among the Manipuris settled in Myanmar.
During the programme, RK Brajendra Singh was also conferred the Nongthongbam Kunjamohan Award.
