Seized betel leaves, tobacco products disposed

Thirty baskets of betel leaves and two boxes of tobacco products namely Shikhar and Zarda seized from two individuals on April 24 and 26 April night respectively by a team of Sekmai police were disposed today at Maharabi as per an order passed by Judicial Magistrate first class Imphal West II.
Even as the Court ordered the disposal of the betel leaves and tobacco products seized earlier, 23 baskets of betel leaves inside a truckload of onions were seized at Sekmai today at about 8.30 pm.
The disposed betel leaves were seized by a team of Sekmai police station along the National Highway while it was being transported to Imphal from Guwahati in a Tata truck along with onion.
The Shikhar and Zarda consignments were seized from a Jeep.
The consignments were seized as transporting non-essential items during the lockdown period is prohibited.
The driver of the Tata truck identified as Jaris Mohamad (45) of Uttar Pradesh was produced before the Court and released on bail but failed to submit the required PR bond and was remanded to judicial remand for 14 days.
Similarly, driver of the Jeep Satminlen Lhouvum (32) of Motbung was produced before the Court on April 27 and was released on bail but he too failed to submit the required PR bond and was remanded to judicial custody.
The consignments were disposed as no one came forward to claim ownership.
The seized betel leaves were disposed today evening at Maharabi in the presence of locals and SDC concerned of Imphal West.
