Imphal, September 02 2020:
Shiv Sena State Unit president, L Tombi has backed the call for by-elections to 13 vacant seats of the State Assembly and enable people of the Constituencies concerned to exercise their franchise and elect their representatives.
Withholding the by-elections may cause hardships to the people and deprive them of their democratic rights.
Without their respective representatives, people of these Assembly Constituencies would suffer more during the pandemic, he said.
Tombi further stated that the Election Commission has begun preparation for holding the by-elections and as such some of the political parties have also started preparations for fielding their candidates.
Considering the prevailing COVID-19 situation, he however stated that the by-elections must be held following the SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) laid down by the health authority, Government and Election Commission.
An all political party meeting should be convened to discuss and come up with the required and essential SOPs and find ways to successfully conduct the by-elections.
He also condemned the resignation of some elected MLAs amid the pandemic and accused them of taking decisions against the interests of the people.
Shiv Sena will field its candidates in the by-elections, he said.
