Tense stand off ensues at Khwairamband

Imphal, August 02 2024: Tension flared up in Khwairamband Keithel today as a confrontation broke out between police and women traders while the latter were preparing to address the media against the excesses meted out to Internally Displaced People (IDPs) from Moreh and a journalist by the State force yesterday.

The incident took place at around 1.30 pm and the confrontation lasted for some time.

To control the situation, Central force personnel also arrived at Khwairamband Keithel but they were chased away by the womenfolk.

Speaking to the media, co-convenor of Khwairamband Ima Keithel Joint Coordinating Committee for Peace (KIKJCCP) H Binodini said that they strongly condemn the excesses meted out by State police on the IDPs and a senior reporter of Impact TV in the strongest terms.

She continued that the police cracking down on IDPs who only wanted to take out a rally to air their grievances and assaulting a journalist were excessive and uncalled for.

KIKJCCP convenor Laishram Memma, on the other hand, said that the police officer who assaulted the journalist must be dismissed as he is not fit to be in law enforcement service.

Asking who gave the order to fire tear gas shells on IDPs, she said that the action of the police was excessive.

She also asked all the legislators to discuss the grievances of IDPs taking refuge in relief camps.
