Imphal, July 02 2013:
Vegetables and fruits imported from outside the State are suspected to have been treated with chemicals so that they can be preserved for longer days.
Talking to The Sangai Express, CAU Associate Professor Kh Ibohal said that tomatoes, brinjal (Khamen Barmashika), apple, grapes and water-melon imported from the outside the State are treated with certain chemicals.
Chemicals used in treating fruits and vegetables can be harmful to human health in the long run.
To know the types of chemicals and their effects on human health, laboratory test is required, Ibohal said.
Drawing attention of both the Government and the public alike, Ibohal said that imported tomatoes may remain fresh for days but they taste inferior as compared to tomatoes produced in the State.
Maroi Nakuppi produced in the State cannot be preserved for more than a couple of days.
Perhaps it is because of using Urea in cultivating Maroi Nakuppi which makes it highly perishable, Ibohal remarked.
