Imphal, November 30 2012:
Governor Gurbachan Jagat has recommended the Government of Manipur to take up steps so that Mapal Kangjeibung, the world's oldest existing polo ground, may be declared a world heritage site.
Addressing the closing function of the 10-day Sangai Festival at Mapal Kangjeibung this evening, Governor Gurbachan Jagat, drawing a reference to his conversation with Hurlingham Polo Association chairman Nicholas Denver about Manipur polo, conveyed his desire that the State Government take up steps so that Mapal Kangjeibung is declared a heritage site.
He lamented that Manipur is known to the outside world more for its law and order problems than its beauty and abundant human resources.
The State Government and the people should work in unison to remove the fear for security among tourists in Manipur.
Abstaining from the festival and asking others to stay away from the festival was not advisable.
All sections of the society should work together and make the festival a grand success every year, the Governor exhorted.

What a tourist needs is not a five star hotel but a basic clean, hygienic and affordable accommodation.
Government agencies need to monitor hotels and other places of stay regularly to ensure that they are maintained at a minimum standard of hygiene and cleanliness.
Paying guest system can also be introduced has Manipur now has many private buildings which easily meet the standard.
The State Government may consider partnering one of the ASEAN countries every year, bringing in entrepreneurs and cultural teams from the partner country, the Governor suggested.
In his speech, Chief Minister O Ibobi stated that despite objections by some organisations, people of all the hill districts participated in the festival with much enthusiasm and zeal.
The State Government has prepared detailed project reports for two mega tourism projects which would be taken up at Imphal and its adjoining areas.
Stating that Manipur would not be able to exploit its vast tourism potential if the law and order situation is not normal, Ibobi pointed out the responsibility of each and every citizen in restoring peace and normalcy.
Chief Secretary DS Poonia and DGP Y Joykumar too spoke at the closing function.
