Imphal, March 31 2012:
People of Kambiron, where the memorial tomb of freedom fighter and Zeliangrong hero Haipou Jadonang is located, have sought immediate attention of the Government to develop the memorial site and adjoining areas as tourist spot as a fitting tribute to the martyr.
People of Kambiron raised this demand during a field survey jointly undertaken by Information Centre for Hill Areas Manipur (ICHAM), Zeliangrong Women Union (ZWU) and the Kabui Mothers' Association (KMA) together with media persons at different places of Tamenglong district.
Kambiron village which is the birthplace of Haipou Jadonang is located along Imphal-Jirinam highway, about 120 Kms from Imphal.
Even as Kambiron village, inhabited by around 1000 people occupies an important landmark in the history of Manipur, it has not yet received the attention it deserved from the Government.
Like Pheidabung at Keishampat where a park has been developed in memory of freedom fighter Haipou Jadonang, Kambiron village has a lingering desire to develop the burial ground of Jadonang as an attractive tourist spot.
Notably, Haipou Jadonang was hung to death at Keishampat Pheidabung by British colonial rulers on the charge of revolting against the British empire.
Kambiron Village Authority chairman Khamguang Kamei appealed to the authorities concerned to develop the burial site as a tourist spot and also to build a modern guest house together with necessary parking facility in view of the large number of trucks which pass by the village everyday.
He said that the village is prepared to provide land for the parking space as well as the guest house.
Though the village has a Primary School and an ICDS centre, there is not a single High School.
At times of sickness and health problems, Kambiron villagers have to travel for about 15 Kms to the health centre located at Nungba which entails many difficulties.
For gynaecological problems and other more serious problems, the villagers have to travel all the way to Imphal.
Highlighting all the woes being encountered by the villagers, the chairman appealed to open a health centre at Kambiron, and also to develop the inter village road.
ICHAM president N Rajendro (Boy) who was part of the visiting team appealed to all the people to inform ICHAM about places associated with the history of Manipur.
He assured that ICHAM would extend all possible assistance in developing such historic places.
He also appealed to the Government to build a guest house together with parking facility at Kambiron for drivers and passengers travelling along Imphal-Jiribam highway.
