Imphal, August 28 2021:
All Manipur Muslims' Organisation Coordinating Committee (AMMOCOC) president S M Jalal has clarified that Sadar Bazar mentioned in the Sadar Bazar Jame Masjid is the name of the mosque and not the address of the area.
Speaking at a press meet held at its Hatta office here on Saturday, Jalal stated that the Sadar Bazar Jame Masjid which is located at Paona Keithel is named for the place was known as Sadar Bazar during the erstwhile British rule in Manipur.
Sadar Bazar Jame Masjid, which remains the oldest mosque in Manipur established in 1896 is sacred to the Muslim community and they are ready to lay down their lives for it, he asserted.
SM Jalal termed as unwarranted that some so called members of Kangleipak Kanba Lup (KKL) on August 26 intimidated the mosque functionaries and issued threats on social media for changing the name of the mosque which has been wrongly entered as Sadar Bazar Masjid in government documents.
Such act of coercion is condemnable, he added.
The AMMOCOC president further said that the organisation and its constituent bodies as well as Manipuri Muslims do not take lightly the position of KKL.
Instead of trying to drive a wedge among the communities, KKL must come forward and have a debate on the matter.
The organisation must apologise in public within 48 hours or else AMMOCOC will lodge police complaint, he cautioned.
Jalal also said that people should be wary of such sectarian attitude at a time when all the communities residing in the state must be working for unity.
