Imphal, June 25 2021:
Manipur People's Party (MPP) vice president Dr S Ibomcha has urged authority concerned to focus on the need to reconstruct Chakpi Dam in Sugnu AC as RCC Dam.
In a statement, Dr S Ibom-cha said that the MI department and the MLAs/ministers of consecutive governments have been reaping profits under the pretext of rebuilding Chakpi Dam as an RCC structure, including sanctioning crores of rupees in the name of clearing sites and construction of culverts over the last 30-40 years.
If the dam had been constructed in the time of Congress' rule, the Sug-nu AC of MLA K Ranjit, who also happened to be the then works minister, the people of the constituency would have reaped the fruits by now.
As such, he (Ibomcha) urged the CM to rebuild the dam as a long term measure.
"Serou GP is located 80 km from Imphal and is surrounded by Imphal and Chakpi rivers.
The village came to being in 1950 after freedom fighter (L) S Churchand Meetei urged for allotment of the land to the then Chief Commissioner Himmat Singh.
At that time, the water of Chakpi was diverted into various tributaries for farming purposes and had been doing so for the past 72 years.
The present Kacha Dam built across the Chakpi river is supplying water to around 800 paddy fields.
If the government built an RCC dam, the harvesting season could be doubled and different crops could be planted, thereby making Manipur a self-sustainable state", he said.
Dr Ibomcha continued: "Although Chakpi river flows into Chindwin River in Myanmar, it is one of the most important rivers in Manipur" .
