WASDEV foundation day highlights women's role

Women's Association for Socio-Economic Development (WASDEV) celebrated its 21st foundation day on Thursday at the Loktak Hall of Manipur Press Club.
The event highlighted the contributions of women to society and their role in addressing contemporary challenges.
The celebration was attended by former chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW), Prof (Dr) Binota Meinam, as the chief guest, while WASDEV president RK Tharaksana presided over the function.
Retired district and sessions judge Aribam Noutuneshwari and HERICOUN president Y Surjit Khuman attended as guests of honour.
In her address, RK Tharaksana reflected on the integral role of women in Manipuri society, and their contributions throughout history.
She noted that women have been pivotal during the current crisis in safeguarding the state's integrity.
Tharaksana called for unity among the people to bridge differences and collectively uphold the state's identity and territorial integrity.
WASDEV general secretary Khumukcham Rasheshwari provided an overview of the historical journey of the Meira Paibi movement, which emerged to resist the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) and address security-related atrocities.
She emphasised the multifaceted roles of women in families and society, particularly during the ongoing crisis.
Rasheshwari urged women to take on more proactive roles in mentoring the younger generation to ensure the continuity of strong societal values.
