Imphal, August 17 2021:
Student Unions of Shri Shri Bal Mukunda Dev Music College (SSBDMC), Government Dance College (GDC) and Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) have cautioned authority concerned against taking up any activities without fulfilling their demands of enabling students of the three institutions to admit in MA course of Manipur University of Culture (MUC) .
The university authority and the govern ment should bear all the responsibilities for any untoward incidents if the university defies the warning, a joint release signed by general secretaries of three student unions said.
It maintained that MUC, which was established in 2015 for imparting education about Manipuri culture at the university level to promote it throughout the world is on the verge of extinction.
The university has failed to solve the problems being faced by the students while number of students admitted in ten departments for MA courses is very less.
Even though the intake capacity in each department is 20, no department has adequate number of students.
In some departments, there are only six students, it pointed out, while adding that the number of students pursuing MA courses might decrease in the upcoming academic session.
The joint release further said that UGC bonafide students might not even apply for admission in BA courses.
In contrary to the medium of teaching published by MUC in its prospectus, which is Manipuri language written in Manipuri script, the teachers are using Bengali script.
Students from Class 1 to MA appear their examination in Meetei Mayek script but it is surprising that Bengali script is still used in the MUC, it elaborated.
Recalling the claim made by MUC VC of working for preserving culture and language, the joint release maintained that the VC should clarify why he is trying to destroy the university and using Bengali script.
Another example of disorder in the university is the absence of university eligibility committee which is meant to filter students from different Boards/Councils during admission to BA courses.
There are reports of students from unrecognised Boards and Councils admitted in MUC, they claimed.
Welcoming the statement made by Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba in the parliament for upgrade of MUC into a central university, the joint release urged the MP to look into the present situation of the varsity instead of remaining silent on the impasse despite his assurance of solving the situation.
The release also contended resignation of members of the academic testifies they are not satisfied with the activities of the varsity.
While urging CM Biren who also holds the portfolio of art & culture and the two advisors of art & culture to look into the matter without delay, the joint release cautioned that the students of the three institutions will resume intense forms of agitation until their demands are honoured.
