Imphal, July 17 2024:
National Students' Union of India (NSUI) national general secretary Md Kabir Ahmad on Wednesday urged the government to resolve the issue concerning Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) at the earliest and save the career of the students, failing which the matter would be taken up at the national level.
Addressing media persons at Ima Panthoibi Hall of Thangmeiband where DMU students are on relay hunger strike, Md Kabir recounted that DMU was upgraded to a university in 2017 but did not have a regular vice chancellor, registrar and non-teaching staff till date.
This has resulted in many inconveniences for students, he noted, while pointing out that as the university has failed to conduct examinations in time, students, particularly those from the constituent colleges are unable to pursue higher education outside the state.
With the university existing for namesake only, the students were compelled to protest for the past nine months to save their career contrary to the government and authority concerned continuing to undermine seriousness of the matter, he remarked.
Md Kabir then urged the government to address the grievances of the students while stating that the issue has already been brought to the attention of NSUI national leaders and cautioned that if the government continues to feign ignorance, then mess in the varsity would be exposed at the national level and made aware to the whole country.
Joining the media briefing, NSUI, Manipur vice president Th Langgonba Singh said that the hunger strike by the students has completed ten days.
Instead of listening to the grievances of the students, the media is swamped with images of police personnel being deployed to "suppress" the students.
Questioning if the government is disregarding the student community, he further wondered if the government is interfering in the autonomous functioning of the university and urged the government to solve the issue at the earliest, failing which NSUI along with other student bodies will launch protests over the issue.
