Imphal, May 17 2022:
Water resources minister Awangbow Newmai has launched a special scheme for Tamei assembly constituency called 'Awangbow Newmai special scheme for widows, widowers, orphans and disabilities' in a function held at Sangaithel Park and Resort on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, Awangbow acknowledged that Tamei is one of the least developed ACs of the state.
While it has its own reasons for the backwardness, location of the constituency is one of the reasons, he said, adding that apart from lack of any specific local products, the AC lacks modern facilities as compared to other ACs and as such, economy is very low.
In the absence of proper healthcare facilities and lack of awareness, mortality rate is high in the constituency.
As a result, there are numerous widows, widowers and orphans.
Though the government is implementing various schemes for them, those schemes cannot cover all the deserving people, and such he is launching the scheme with his monthly salary, he said and added that he is delivering his pre poll commitment.
The minister said he will reserve 65 per cent of his monthly salary for the scheme.
Some of his workers are also contributing whatever they could towards the scheme, he said and added that 400 select beneficiaries will get Rs 500 per month and the same amount will be transferred into the bank accounts of the beneficiaries through DBT after every three months.
Awangbow further said that the scheme will exist until the current term of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly is over.
A committee has been formed to shortlist beneficiaries from among the recommendations submitted by village chairmen.
Selection of beneficiaries will be completed by June and the scheme implemented from July onwards, he added.
ADC Tamenglong caretaker chairman Namshinrai Pamei also attended the event among others.
