Role of ICAR hailed on its foundation day

Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), NE Research Complex Manipur Centre celebrated the 96th Foundation Day of ICAR at the Lamphelpat conference hall of the centre, here, on Tuesday.
The celebration was attended by commissioner (agriculture) RK Dinesh as chief guest and ICAR Manipur Centre HORC Dr Ramgopal as president while director (horticulture and soil conservation) K Devdutta, deputy director (agriculture) AK Chittaranjan Singh and ICAR Manipur centre retired PI scientist Dr I Meghachandra Singh were present as guests of honour.
Speaking at the event, RK Dinesh noted ICAR's contribution as a research institute in accelerating development in the held of agriculture and horticulture.
He recalled that ICAR was established on July 16, 1929 consequent to frequent famines during the 19th century killing millions of people across the globe.
With the last report of the famine commission in 1926 recommending food security as basic necessity ICAR was established in 1929 with fruition of the decision evident from India facing famine for the last in 1943, he recalled, adding that it is generally accepted that famine in India ended after the establishement of ICAR.
According to RK Dinesh, India achieved self-sufficiency in food with the initiation of green revolution following establishment of ICAR and even got self-sufficiency international award in the year 1988 .
Global price of rice fluctuates every time India exports rice further showcasing success of the green revolution in the country, he said and opined that contribution of ICAR to the country has been on the rise.
Later, RK Dinesh released journals published by KVKs and also distributed agricultural inputs to farmers.
