Imphal, March 12 2025:
The World Glaucoma Week - 2025 was jointly organised by National Program for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment (NPCB&VI), NHM and Directorate of Health Services at Classic Grande in Chingmeirong on Wednesday.
Speaking at the event organised under the theme "Uniting for a Glaucoma Free World" as chief guest, Health Services director Dr Chambo Gonmei cautioned that glaucoma is a disease that can lead to lifelong blindness, thereby entailing individuals to take preventive measures.
Quoting reports, he stated that over 8 million people worldwide are affected by glaucoma.
"Although there is no specific data on the incidence of glaucoma in the state, many individuals are diagnosed with the condition during routine eye tests," he said.
The director further stated that, as of now, glaucoma cannot be eradicated, while highlighting the need for increased awareness about the disease to prevent its spread.
While eye conditions like cataracts can be treated with surgery, glaucoma, once contracted, cannot be cured, leading to permanent blindness, he reiterated, adding that the disease is primarily associated with individuals who have diabetes, hypertension, and the elderly.
Presided over by NHM Manipur state mission director Dr M Dinesh, the function was attended by Family Welfare director Dr N Hemantakumar as guest of honour.
State Ophthalmic Cell, NPCB&VI Manipur DNO, Imphal West Dr Jayshree Takhellambam presented an informative talk on glaucoma during the function.
