National Legal Service Day: CJ Mridul bats for legal aid for marginalised

Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) observed National Legal Services Day 2024 with a walkathon from High Court of Manipur to MASLSA ADR Centre, Lamphelpat on Saturday.
The walkathon was led by MASLSA patron-in-chief and High Court of Manipur Chief Justice Siddharth Mridul along with MASLSA executive chairman and High Court of Manipur Judge Justice A Bi-mol Singh, judicial officers, All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) members, High Court of Manipur Bar Association members, High Court of Manipur, MASLSA and Legal Aid Defence Counsel System (LADCS) officials.
Speaking to media persons, Chief Justice Siddharth Mridul stated that November 9 is observed as National Legal Services Day at Central, state, district and sub-division level, as on this day the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 was enacted in 1987.The day reaffirms the commitment of legal service functionaries to provide free legal aid to weaker sections of the society especially, Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe, women, children, persons with disabilities and people in custody of law, he added.
Justice Mridul continued that the walkathon has been organised with an aim to raise public awareness about free and competent legal aid.
National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) has opened a toll free helpline number-15100 for offering free legal aid and assistance.
The toll free number is multilingual including Manipuri language, hence anyone who wants legal aid or legal advice can the toll free number.
The call will be picked by retainer lawyer of every district who will help the caller in getting required legal advice, he further informed.
In connection with the observance, respective district legal service authorities organised legal awareness programmes in every district and Legal Mobile Van were stationed at different locations including Ima Keithel which gave on-spot legal advice through legal experts and conducted legal quizzes.
Similarly, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Imphal West organised National Legal Services Day cum Commemoration programme on Saturday.
The event was attended by DLSA, Imphal West chairman and Imphal West District and Sessions Judge Yumkham Rothar; DLSA, Imphal West secretary cum CJM Asem Tarunakumari; judicial staff of the district; AMBA members; panel advocate; legal aid clinic advocates; defence councils and PLVs.
Meanwhile, DLSA, Thoubal and Legal Aid Clinic, Kiyam Leitanpok under the aegis of MASLSA jointly observed National Legal Services Day 2024 at Thoubal Kiyam Shiphai Wangmataba Amureijam Leikai on Saturday.
The observance, participated by around 100 people, was attended by Thoubal Municipal Council Ward No 14 caretaker councillor Thingujam (o) Sangita Devi as chief guest; Legal Aid Clinic, Kiyam Leitanpok para legal volunteer Laishram Thambaltombi Devi as president with DLSA, Thoubal panel lawyer Lembisana Meidingu and advocate Khoisnam Jeton Meitei speaking as resource persons.
As part of the programme, a song on National Legal Services was played for the attendees.
