Moreh, December 06 2021:
Unauthorised trading between India and Myanmar through the Moreh sector could not be legalised due to lack of international trade knowledge among traders subsequently posing as hurdle in the Indo-Myanmar trade, stated Customs Division Imphal assistant commissioner HL Songate.
Songate made this remark while speaking at a joint meet on 'Strengthening Border Connectivity' organised by Research and Information System for Developing Countries, New Delhi in coordination with Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) at ICP, Moreh Monday.
While snaring his experience in border trade for more than 20 years having been posted in different border states, Songate said international trade system being practiced in other border states is different from the current system of Indo-Myanmar trade through Moreh border town.
None of the traders in Moreh possess important component of international trade like Card H, G and F and they have no knowledge about guidelines for trade mentioned in the Indian laws.
This hampers the existing trade between India and Myanmar through Moreh, he said.
Subsequent to the officer's explanation, traders present said that they were unaware of Card H, G and F as no officials talked about this in the past and they would be unable to continue their business if 40 percent tax levied on imported goods including essential items except Supari (betel nut) is not reviewed.
As chief guest at the meet, LPAI director (Operation) Ajeet Kumar said seminar and workshop relating to international trade will be organised at Moreh to make the traders aware about pre-requisites on practicing international trade.
This will help speedy legalisation of Indo-Myanmar trade through 1CP Moreh which is currently being practiced illegally.
The meet was also attended by ICP Moreh manager Robin Gangte, 43 Assam Rifles CO Col Sumit Sood, Moreh traders, CSO leaders and officials of different departments.
