Poppy plantation root cause of deforestation: CCF

Expressing deep concern over continuous deforestation in Manipur, chief conservator of forests (CCF) (territorial-1) Longjam Joykumar has revealed that Manipur lost a total of 748 sqkm of forest land between 2013 and 2019.Disclosing this during World Environment Day observance organised by Manipur University of Culture at Palace Compound here on Sunday, Joykumar cited ISFR (India State of Forest Report) report of Forest Survey of India and said that Manipur lost 499 sqkm forest between the year 2013-2017 and 249 sq km from 2017 to 2019.He also pointed that widespread poppy plantation is one main factor for increasing deforestation activities in Manipur.
Longjam Joykumar presented a talk on 'Sacred grooves of Umang Lai and biodiversity conservation' during the observance function organised by Lai Haraoba department of MUC at the conference hall of art and culture department.
The function was also attended by MUC vice chancellor Paonam Gunindro, registrar Laishram Radhakanta, deputy registrar Dr Lourembam Surjit and Lai Haraoba department head Dr Oinam Binarani.
