Man drowns in excavation pit

Ukhrul, October 03 2024: In a tragic incident, a man from Ch'ingjaroi Khu-llen village under Jessami police station, drowned in a river after he accidentally stepped into a deep pit on the riverbed caused by stone extraction by Gunpati Pvt Ltd, which is engaged in the ongoing construction of NH-102A.The deceased, Kapangkhui R son of Asew R of Chingjaroi Khullen, had gone fishing in the village river on Tuesday night.

Local villagers recovered his lifeless body late Wednesday evening after conducting a search operation since the night he went missing in the river.

The villagers have expressed their resentment against Gunpati Pvt Ltd for not putting up any danger signboard to alert the villagers after the excavation left a big, dangerous cavity in the river bed.
