Strike over missing VDF suspended after Govt assurance

The JAC formed in connection with the missing case of VDF Ningombam Premananda Singh (37) s/o Dina of Thoubal Okram Maning Leikai, who reportedly went missing while on an overnight duty with a police team led by Chandel SDPO to destroy poppy plantations in Phaisi village area of Indo Myanmar border on January 16, imposed an indefinite general strike on Wednesday, after the authorities concerned failed to provide any information on the status of the case including the VDF's current whereabouts by January 31, as previously cautioned.
The strike heavily impacted the movement of vehicular traffic along Trans Asian Highway-102 .
Locals of Thoubal Okram and surrounding areas came out since the wee hours and began blocking the highway.
Meanwhile, strict security measures were taken up by District Police Thoubal to prevent any unwanted incidents.
Later, Works minister Govindas Kongthoujam met with members of the JAC at his office chamber, following which the general strike has been suspended for few days, from around 2.30 pm Wednesday A public meeting was then held at Okram Lampak, where -in JAC convenor N Wanglen informed that the JAC met minister Govindas, top police officers and Khangabok AC MLA O Surjakumar along with social worker L Basanta, wherein the government assured of using the latest technologies from Thursday for finding the missing VDF and sought 3 days' time.
As such, it was decided to suspend the general strike till February 5 .
However, if the authorities fail to produce Premananda by then, the general strike will resume from February 6 onwards, he conveyed.
