Lamka, July 25 2014 :
Although the Khuga Multi-purpose Project has been inaugurated and a huge amount incurred in its construction, no power has been generated so far, while irrigation of cultivable land and water supply to Churachandpur district is yet to be started, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Khuga Dam Project has lamented.
"For the last 28 years, the Congress government in Manipur led by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh as well as the prominent leaders in the Congress led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) have been deceiving the poor public of Churachandpur, saying that seventy per cent of the project has been completed and the multi-purpose project of Khuga dam has started giving benefits to the people of Churachandpur.
Sonia Gandhi, the chairperson of the UPA inaugurated the project on 12th November,2010," said the JAC in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The JAC on Khuga Dam Project told the Prime Minister that numerous representations were submitted to the government of Manipur as well as to the Centre for completion of the project in public interest, and also to clear all pending liabilities to the local contractors.
However, nothing concrete has been done by the governments so far.
The JAC for Kuga Dam Project requested Narendra Modi to send a team to Churachandpur for on-the-spot verification, to find out irregularities in the execution of the project, and probe misappropriation of funds and to bring about development in the areas.
The Khuga Dam Multo-purpose project was duly approved by the Planning Commission of India, at an estimated cost of Rs.15,00 Crores in the year 1980, and the project is also included in the Prime Minister's package announced during his visit to Manipur in 2004.But due to incompetent handling, there has been an inordinate delay in completion of the project resulting in massive escalation of the estimated cost which was revised to Rs.434.65 Crores, the JAC pointed out.
