Ukhrul, December 18 2024:
A first-of-its-kind Book Fair, showcasing over 20,000 titles spanning various genres, commenced on Wednesday at town hall, Phungreitang.
The Book Fair, which is set to run until December 22, is being organised by the Thawaijao Hungpung Young Stu dents' Organisation (THYSO) in collaboration with Bookculture/Northeast.
The opening ceremony was attended by Ukhrul DC Zuringla Kengoo as the chief guest, and ZEO Thaimei Badan as a special guest.
In her address, DC Kengoo praised THYSO for spearheading this initiative, highlighting the importance of such events in motivating the community, particularly students, to cultivate a reading habit.
She urged students to embrace reading as it is essential for their future success.
ZEO Badan echoed her sentiments, encouraging young attendees to adopt a reading habit, emphasising that academic success is unlikely without reading habit.
THYSO president Hubert Lunghar shared that this is the first large-scale book fair ever held in Ukhrul town, expressing hope that it would inspire a passion for reading and provide the local community with access to diverse and enriching literature.
He also announced plans to make this event an annual occurrence starting this year.
The Book Fair features thousands of titles across genres, including fiction, non fiction, young adult, and children's literature.
It offers exciting promotions, such as the option to buy books by the kilogram, a "buy two, get one free" deal, and discounts of up to 50% on select titles.
Additionally, the event will include interactive sessions on December 19, featuring storytelling and sketching activities for students.
The programme will culminate on December 22 with book reading sessions led by renowned authors Iknguira L Shimray and Thingamphy Haoram.
The inaugural day was well-attended, with members of local civil society organisations, students from various schools and colleges, and enthusiastic community members in attendance.
