Kangpokpi, July 18 2022:
To phase out Single-Use Plastic (SUP) and move towards a plastic-free town, Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council (SHADC), Kangpokpi led a plastic drive today at Kangpokpi District Headquarters.
The drive led by Limminthang Haokip, Executive Officer (Town), SHADC Kangpokpi was participated by representatives of Kangpokpi Town Committee and a team of Kangpokpi Police.
The shop-to-shop drive was held in various market places of Kangpokpi DHQs including Nute Kailhang, restaurants, hotels, meat vendors, chicken centres, etc.
Speaking to media persons, Limminthang Haokip stated that with the nationwide ban on SUP coming into effect on July 1, the SHADC is committed to keeping a strict vigil on the ban in Kangpokpi district.
He continued that adhering to the District Administration notification following the enforcement of "Manipur Plastic Policy, 2022" incorporating Regulatory Framework and Action Plan for effective management of plastic waste and complete elimination of SUP, the SHADC Kangpokpi has made a concerted effort for effective implementation of the policy.
He also recalled that for the effective implementation of "Manipur Plastic Policy, 2022" and as part of its concerted efforts in curbing the use of SUP, the SHADC had already organised an one-day friendly awareness programme with license holders and shopkeepers of Kangpokpi DHQs on "Ban on the use of SUP" .
Limminthang Haokip further mentioned that the awareness programme held on July 14 at SHADC Conference Hall had an immense impact on the ban on SUP in the town as most of the shopkeepers and public were seen avoiding the use of SUP.
During the drive, the teams found that almost all the shops were using nonplastic bags while some shop owners were seen placing the notice/pamphlets reading, "Please carry your own bag for shopping, don't ask for a plastic bag from the shopkeeper, sorry for the inconvenience" both in English and local dialect in front of their shops.
