Kakching, October 14 2024:
Residents of Wangoo Sandangkhong took to the streets on Monday to voice their frustrations over the dilapidated condition of the Ithai Barrage to Sugnu Thongkhong road, which has been neglected for the past 12 years.
The 23-kilometre stretch serves as a vital lifeline for approximately 20 villages in Sugnu assembly constituency under Kakching district, but its current condition has left the locals grappling with severe inconveniences.
The protest highlighted locals' growing concerns over alleged government apathy to the critical infrastructure.
Protestor Ch Bimol expressed that the road's deterioration has significantly disrupted daily activities for the community.
It is the main access route for the people of the area, and the lack of maintenance has made it almost impassable, affecting their daily chores.
Chief minister N Biren had earlier assured that renovations would commence after end of the rainy season.
However, lack of visible progress has led to growing frustration among the local population.
Despite the CM's assurances, people could not see any concrete steps taken to repair the road, Bimol added.
The protestors asked the government to prioritise repairing of the road, and urged officials to include it in their upcoming work programmes.
If the government continues to ignore their pleas, the locals will have no choice but to intensify their agitation, warned Bimol.
