Imphal, September 12 2024:
Calling it baseless and misleading, Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) has strongly condemned statements made by the Meitei Heritage Society, DeMaS, and NUPI, Delhi, against former DG of Assam Rifles lieutenant general PC Nair, who the Inpi called a distinguished military leader.
In a release, KIM information & publicity secretary Janghaolun Haokip said such fabricated allegations, devoid of any credible evidence, are not only a direct attack on Lt Gen Nair's reputation but on the AR; designed to distract people from the real issues that continues to plague Manipur.
The ongoing violence in Manipur, which has devastated the Kuki-Zo people, has been fuelled by the spread of misinformation by dubious organisations.
Their sole aim seems to be the perpetuation of hatred and the stoking of communal tensions, rather than contributing to peace and reconciliation, it alleged.
KIM also maintained that the impact of the violence on the Kuki-Zo community is well documented, with heart breaking statistics that paint a stark picture with 199 deaths, 200-plus villages burnt, over 7,000 houses destroyed, more than 360 churches and synagogues reduced to ashes, and 41,425 people displaced.
By falsely accusing Lt Gen Nair of disregarding facts and questioning the role of the AR, these groups are deflecting attention from the atrocities being committed against the Kuki-Zo people, it said.
KIM further appealed to the Government of India to urgently intervene and investigate activities of these malicious organisations.
"We call upon central agencies such as the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the involvement of these groups in spreading falsehoods and destabilising the region.
Their reckless actions are endangering the lives of civilians and undermining the efforts of the security forces who are striving to restore peace in Manipur," it said.
KIM also demanded that these fabricated allegations be withdrawn and that an apology be issued to Lt Gen PC Nair, while adding, "We also urge the government to take swift action to prevent further dissemination of harmful disinformation that continues to fuel violence and suffering".
"Kuki Inpi Manipur remains steadfast in our commitment to ensuring justice for our people.
The ongoing suffering of the Kuki-Zo community must not be ignored, and those who spread lies and hatred must be held accountable" .
"Furthermore, these mushrooming dubious organisations only show that the Kuki-Zo people can no longer live under the same umbrella with the Meeteis and therefore our call for separate administration is even more stronger which Government of India should-consider at the earliest possible moment," it said.
