EEVFAM resents AFSPA shield to accused personnel

Extra-Judicial Execution Victim Families' Association Manipur (EEVFAM) celebrated its 15th foundation day under the theme 'Stop Militarisation and Ethnic Polarisation in Manipur' at Manipur Press Club, here, on Thursday.
Speaking at the event, EEVFAM president Renu Takhellambam highlighted that it was formed to protest atrocities committed against the people of Manipur under and misuse of Armed Forces' Special Powers Act (AFSPA) .
While stating that many women have been widowed, and mothers separated from their sons due'to protracted imposition of AFSPA, she also expressed apprehension about recurrence of the notorious stage-managed encounters amidst the humanitarian crisis gripping the state.
While appealing to the state government to initiate to resolve the on-going conflict and ensure that number of widows in the state do not increase, Renu confided that EEVFAM has registered cases related to numerous incidents of killing in fake encounters involving not only state forces but also central forces.
Regardless of confirmed cases, accused security force personnel could not be put on trial in the court primarily due to AFSPA acting as the shield, she maintained while explaining that without consent of the central government, no punitive actions can be processed against the central forces.
The president fervently appealed to the central government to grant prosecution sanction to proceed with the cases registered by EEVFAM.
The function was also attend -ed by AMKIL advisor Anandi Khangembam, DM University political science associate professor Dr Nord Arambam, Nambol L Sanoi College political science associate professor Ningombam Shreema and Manipur University law associate professor Dr Sapam Dilip as presidium members.
