Ukhrul, September 10 2024:
Taking strong exception to the statewide internet ban, Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (TMNL-Youth Council) has appealed to the state government to immediately revoke the internet ban order from its jurisdiction covering Ukhrul and Kamjong districts.
"We strongly condemn the state government's act of imposing a blanket ban on internet irrespective of conflict and peaceful zones.
We urgently appeal to the government to immediately retract the internet ban order from Ukhrul and Kamjong districts which have remained peaceful," TMNL president Themaso Tallanao told The People's Chronicle in a communication on Tuesday evening, a few moments after the ban order was released.
According to Tallanao, the internet ban in places like Ukhrul and Kamjong districts cannot be justified by any yardstick, considering that the region is under the green zone.
"Internet shutdown without legitimate ground is a serious concern as it has violated the fundamental rights of the innocent citizens who have nothing to do with the conflict," he contended.
Whilenoting unrest situation in certain parts of the state, Tallanao stated that the internet ban should be specific to the areas affected by the conflict and not to be imposed indiscriminately.
"It's our earnest appeal to the state government to respond positively to our plea on this crucial matter, failing which we would be compelled to take recourse to intense form of agitations", Tallanao cautioned.
