Imphal, April 09 2022:
People's Alliance for Peace and Progress, Manipur (PAAPM) on Saturday staged a protest in front of Kangla Western Gate against encroachment on public and government land.
Speaking on the sidelines, PAAP Manipur president M Bobby Meetei remarked that illegal encroachment on public or government land including natural water bodies by private individuals is not a new issue.
This has not only caused loss of large areas of public land and the government needs to put a stop to the same pronto.
The frequent occurrences of congestion in Imphal, flooding and other issues are caused by such illegal encroachments and subsequent conversion into private properties.
He then recounted instances of conflicts between the government and the people who have taken over public land, and predicted that such conflicts will continue in future as well.
Many have attempted to associate such conflicts with communal prejudices, religion and others.
Thus, the people should not encroach upon public land and the government needs to take stringent steps to look into such issues and take the necessary measures, he contended.
Bobby then reminded that if the people were to continue illegal encroachment, it will not only hinder the development of the state but also affect the natural ecosystem and the serene beauty of the state.
Hence, the recent initiative taken up by the government to protect the khas land is a good step and the people should extend their support.
Thus, he urged the people to identify and report those who have illegally taken over government land, while further urging all concerned to work together to protect the public land.
Bobby also appealed to the state government to address the aforementioned issue as soon as possible.
