Imphal, September 08 2024:
Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, has strongly condemned alleged assault on its security personnel, Hodam Premchandra Singh, while he was on duty at the northern gate of RIMS campus near the MTDC Gate.
The incident occurred on September 7 around 5:30 pm.
According to a statement issued by RIMS Media Cell, a police complaint has been filed at Lamphel police station regarding the incident.
According to the complaint, a group of four to five individuals, led by one Chongtham Bijoy Singh, attacked Hodam Premchandra and verbally abused him while he was performing his duties.
Two other security personnel, Mazibur Rahaman and Ningthoukhongjam Dolan Singh, attempted to intervene in the altercation.
The incident reportedly began when a few unauthorised individuals tried to sneak through the northern gate.
The security staff, following heightened security protocols issued by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, prevented their entry.
These measures have been implemented following the recent Kolkata rape case to ensure campus safety, the statement said.
It further noted that according to a district judge's order, residents of Lamphel Khunou and their family members are allowed to use the road between the MTDC gate and SIB gate for domestic and religious purposes.
However, public entry through these gates remains restricted due to security concerns.
RIMS Authority expressed serious concern over this incident, referencing a similar episode of violence and vandalism that took place in May of this year.
Acts of violence and blatant disregard for the law will not be tolerated under any circumstances, the statement said.
The RIMS statement further urged the public to respect the rule of law and refrain from unauthorised entry through the restricted gates.
The institution emphasised that such behaviour undermines the safety and security of everyone on the campus.
RIMS is commitment to taking all necessary measures to ensure the protection of its staff and the wider community, it added.
