Imphal, December 05 2024:
People of Lei Ingkhol have opposed the plan of the Government's to evict them to Langthrei Loukol under Keirao Assembly Constituency.
Speaking to reporters at the locality today, Lei Ingkhol Youth Development Organisation president K Rocky said the people are against the planned eviction for expansion of the complex of the High Court of Manipur.
He said, most of the people of Lei Ingkhol are descendants of people who were suffering from Leprosy and were avoided by the society.
Lei Ingkhol has 156 households with a total population of around 936, of which 488 are registered voters under Wangkhei Assembly Constituency.
Since 2004, there have been attempts to evict the people of Lei Ingkhol for construction/expansion of the High Court and Civil Secretariat.
"Lei Ingkhol is our home and we are against this planned eviction," he said.
He suggested that the expansion of the High Court may be made in areas in Lei Ingkhol not occupied by the residents.
"If the eviction is to take effect, the residents may be given land to relocate within Wangkhei Assembly Constituency.
The residents are against the planned relocation to Langthrei Loukol which falls under Keirao AC," Rocky said.
He further refuted a 2013 Government assessment that there are only 110 houses in Lei Ingkhol.
There are actually 156 houses in Lei Ingkhol, he added.
The Government has notified allotment of land measuring 30x40 feet per household.
This allotment of land must be changed to 70x80 feet per household.
Before evicting the people, a pucca house for every household under Government housing scheme must be built on the allotted land, he said.
The new community should have a public ground, community hall, crematorium, public pond, club and Meira Shang already built and ready for use.
If these conditions are not met, the people of Lei Ingkhol can't agree to any relocation, Rocky said.
