Awareness prog on Lac cultivation concludes

A five-day farmers' awareness programme on Scientific Methods of Lac Cultivation for Additional Farmers' Income' organised by AINP-Conservation of Lac Insect Genetic Resources, College of Agriculture (COA), Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, concluded on Saturday at the college.
Valedictory ceremony of the training participated by around 200 farmers from Noney, Senapati, Chandel, Tamenglong and Ukhrul districts, was attended by CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology, Lamphelpat, chief scientist & Prof of AcSIR Dr Huidrom Birkumar Singh, GOA professor & project PI Dr Kh Ibohal and COA professor & HoD, BPME Dr Lokesh Kumar Mishra.
In his address, Dr Birkumar highlighted the potential of lac cultivation to enhance farmers' income along with pointed out that lac cultivation, being well-suited to the state's environment, provides higher yield and quality product compared to other regions.
He also stressed its eco-friendly nature, stating that lac is an organic compound, and encouraged planting trees that could drive economic growth.
Meanwhile, Dr Kh Ibohal stated that the programme focussed on surveying host plants for lac insects, cultivation techniques, and harvesting methods.
Pointing out that by-products of lac could also be converted into cash, further enhancing the farmers' incomes, he expressed confidence that once farmers become familiar with lac cultivation, they would be eager to engage in the field.
